Historical Origins

Apalachicola is a city filled with history. As one of the oldest cities in Florida, It has seen it all. Apalachicola has strong Indigenous roots. It is believed that native cultures lived in the area during the Woodland and Mississippian periods. Europeans are also believed to have explored Apalachicola in the 1500s. The first European settlement of the area, however, was a fort built by the Spanish in 1705 that was eventually ceded to England in 1763.

Throughout this time, seafood has always had a cultural and economic significance in Apalachicola. The seafood industry has primarily shaped the culture and maritime heritage of the region and anchored the growing nature-based tourism that has allowed the region to flourish. Apalachicola’s seafood industry started with oysters. As early as 1836, oysters were caught locally in the Apalachicola region. The seafood industry then began to really take off when Herman Ruge opened the Ruge Brothers Canning Company in 1885. With their company, the Ruge family became the first successful seafood packers in Florida.

By the twentieth century, many large and small seafood dealers were in Apalachicola. Fishing and oystering became the second most important industries in Franklin County. While the industry died down a bit throughout the twentieth century, several seafood dealers can still be found along the Apalachicola Riverfront.

Experiencing the Festival

The Florida Seafood Festival brings attention back to this major, founding industry that helped Apalachicola and the surrounding Franklin County thrive. The festival is held annually in downtown Apalachicola at Battery Park and lasts for two days. Last year, it was held on November 3, 2023, and November 4, 2023, so you can expect it to be held around the same time this year.

The festival is a lot more than just eating some of the local seafood. During the festival, you can see the community of Apalachicola come together in celebration to have a fun time participating in various events and honoring the industry that helped to create the place they call home. If you plan on staying in Apalachicola, St. George Island, or the surrounding region, the Seafood Festival may be one of the most fun activities you can participate in during your stay.

The Seafood

The biggest aspect of the Florida Seafood Festival is the seafood. Since seafood has always been such an important factor in the settlement and economic success of Apalachicola and the surrounding area, it is of course the most important attribute of the festival.

While attending the festival, you have plenty of opportunities to try the various seafood dishes that are offered. The main seafood available for those who attend to enjoy is oysters. Oysters are what started the seafood industry in the region, so it makes sense that this seafood is the main dish on display for all to enjoy during the festival. While the Florida Seafood Festival is a great place to try different types of seafood, you will find that there is much more to the festival than just eating food.

Beyond the Food

There is much more to the Florida Seafood Festival than eating different types of seafood. Much of the festival revolves around the different competitions and events that are held during the festival. The festival begins with the Seafood Festival Parade. This helps to kick off the festival in a big way. This colorful and festive parade is great fun for all who attend. Children can enjoy the treats that are thrown from the different floats, and everyone can enjoy seeing all of the different floats that take part in the parade.

Two of the main events of the festival are centered around Apalachicola’s first seafood industry, oysters. There is the oyster eating contest and the oyster shucking contest. Both of these events involve showing different sets of skills and can be a fun experience to participate in or just watch.

Some other big events that happen during the festival are the Blue Crab Races, Redfish Run, carnival, arts and crafts exhibits, and some live musical entertainment. All of these are great ways to spend the day in Apalachicola and can truly make you feel like part of the Apalachicola community.
